History

The IMD Guest House Foundation fills a critical void in the field of health care delivery, an essential, but often overlooked need of patients going through treatment and their family members, the need for shelter. When a critically ill patient must travel to Chicago to receive medical care, often times the last thing being considered in the treatment plan is where the patient will stay in between treatments and where her/his family members and caregivers will stay. For hundreds of patients and their family members, the IMD Guest House Foundation is the answer.

Founded in 1999, the IMD Guest House Foundation provides safe, affordable accommodations in a caring environment for patients and their families who travel for transplants, heart surgery, cancer treatment and other medical care at Chicago area hospitals. The Guest House offers a fully furnished, comfortable, private guest room on a sliding scale basis. Striving to provide a worry-free, supportive experience for its guests, the Guest House helps keep families and medical care close during a most difficult time. The Guest House provides over 360 nights of service each month, with nearly 60% of guests receiving financial assistance. The Guest House is a member of the Healthcare Hospitality Network, a national association of organizations providing family-centered lodging and support services to families and their loved ones receiving medical treatment far from their home communities. The IMD Guest House Foundation continually aids the friends and families of transplant, cancer, heart surgery, and other patients in order to fully involve them in the treatment and recovery of the patient.

IMD Guest House Foundation is located in Chicago’s Illinois Medical District, the nation’s largest concentration of health care institutions that attracts patients from all over the world. The Guest House is situated in walking distance from some of the most highly regarded hospitals in the country: Rush University Medical Center, University of Illinois Hospital and Health Science System, John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. The Guest House the only facility in Chicago that serves both children and adult patients and families of children and adult patients, offering a safe and supportive place to stay. Rooms are available those receiving care at partner hospitals or at any Chicago area hospital with a Cancer Treatment Center Referral.
